Attendance

At Halsey Drive School, regular attendance is essential for your child's academic progress, wellbeing and sense of belonging.  Being at school every day supports consistent learning, strong friendships and positive social development.

Schools are required to mark attendance registers twice daily in line with Ministry of Education requirements.

We value working in partnership with whanau to ensure every child attends regularly and arrives ready to learn.

To Report an Absence / Lateness

If your child is going to be absent (illness, medical appointments, family reasons, etc) or arriving late, please notify the school office before 8.55am on the day of each absence / lateness.

It is the responsibility of parents and caregivers to inform the school of any absence or lateness.

Messages can be left 24/7 using one of the following methods:

HERO: Use the HERO App (this is the preferred method)

PHONE: (09) 627 9106 and Press 1 to leave an absence message

EMAIL: absences@halseydrive.school.nz

FORM: Reporting an Absence/Lateness

Please include:

  • Your child's full name

  • Room number

  • Reason for absence/lateness

To ensure absences are recorded correctly, please use the options above rather than emailing the teachers directly, as staff may be teaching and often do not check emails during school hours.

Under Ministry of Education guidelines, if no explanation is received, the absence will be recorded as unjustified (truant) in your child's attendance record.

If your child is absent due to illness for more than five consecutive days, a medical certificate may be required.

We appreciate your support in helping us ensure all children are safe and accounted for each day.

Planned Holidays During Term Time

If you are planning a holiday during term time, please notify our Principal and the school office in writing or by email.

Principal: jsomerville@halseydrive.school.nz

Office: absences@halseydrive.school.nz

Please include:

Dates of travel

Return to school date

Destination

Purpose - for accurate recording of the absence to the Ministry of Education

While we understand that family commitments arise, regular attendance during term time is strongly encouraged to minimise disruption to learning.

Lateness

School begins promptly at 8.55am.

Students arriving after 8.55am must report to the school office, sign in on the VisTab tablet and take an orange Late Card to the teacher.  This ensures attendance records are accurate and prevents unnecessary follow-up calls to whanau.

Arriving on time to school helps children settle into learning routines and begin their day positively with their classmates.

Picking Up Students Early

If your child needs to leave school before 3.00pm for a legitimate reason, they must be signed out at the school office by a parent or caregiver using VisTab.

Office staff will notify the classroom teacher once the student has been signed out.  For safety reasons, children cannot leave directly from the classroom without being signed out at the office.

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

At Halsey Drive School, students in Years 4, 5, and 6 have the option to bring their own device to support their learning.

We believe that access to digital tools enhances student engagement, fosters ownership and choice in learning, and enables meaningful connections within and beyond the classroom. Our BYOD approach supports flexible, responsive learning tailored to each student’s needs and interests.

If you are considering purchasing a device for your child, we recommend exploring options through Cyclone Computers.

Concerns or Complaints

At Halsey Drive School, we value open communication and are committed to working in partnership with whānau to support our students. We encourage whānau to reach out as soon as possible so we can work together to find a positive way forward.

Concerns relating to student progress or behaviour should be discussed with the classroom teacher in the first instance. In order for Halsey Drive School to ensure open communication and fair treatment of concerns and complaints, we have a Concerns and Complaints Process.

If further support is needed, or if your concern is of a different nature, please contact the school office to arrange a meeting with a Deputy Principal or the Principal.
