Our School

Halsey Drive School is proud of its unique history and strong community roots.

Our History

The school is named in honour of Vice-Admiral William Halsey, a U.S. Navy admiral who served in the South Pacific during World War II. This nautical heritage is reflected in the naming of many surrounding streets, which honour notable ships.

Established in 1968, Halsey Drive School has steadily grown over the decades. Today, we have 20 classroom spaces and a vibrant school community.

Our School Badge

Our school badge reflects the heritage and values of our school through four symbolic elements:

  • The ship on a stylised harbour acknowledges the school's connection to the Manukau Harbour Board, former developers of the area.

  • The Olympic torch represents the ideals of sportsmanship and the importance of physical wellbeing.

  • The quill and book at the centre symbolise education—the heart of all we do at Halsey Drive.

  • The stylised tree reflects the natural landscape of the area before it was developed for residential use.

At the base of the badge is a scroll bearing our school motto:
MĀTAURANGA – Learning and the acquisition of desirable knowledge.

Our Vision

Inspiring lifelong learners who are curious, confident, and connected

At Halsey Drive School, our vision is at the heart of everything we do. We aim to inspire lifelong learners—ākonga who are excited by discovery, empowered to take ownership of their learning, and motivated to grow throughout their lives. We nurture curiosity by encouraging questions, creativity, and a sense of wonder about the world.

Our learners develop confidence through a strong foundation in skills, values, and resilience, enabling them to embrace challenges and thrive. We foster connection by promoting strong relationships, cultural understanding, and meaningful engagement with our local and global communities.

Through this vision, we prepare our students to be active, compassionate, and capable citizens of the future.

Our Values

Our school values are woven seamlessly into everything we do.

Our Goals

At Halsey Drive School, our strategic goals guide our everyday teaching, learning, and school-wide decision making. Together, these goals reflect our commitment to nurturing learners who are curious, confident, and connected.

  • We offer a broad, engaging curriculum that reflects the diverse identities, languages, and cultures of our learners. It is designed to be future-focused, inclusive, and aligned with the refreshed New Zealand Curriculum, ensuring that all ākonga experience success across learning areas.

  • We believe every child can achieve. Our programmes are designed to be personalised and adaptive, recognising the unique strengths, interests, and needs of each learner—including those who are neurodiverse or require additional support.

  • We are committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and positive environment where wellbeing is woven through all aspects of school life. When tamariki and staff feel valued, supported, and respected, they are empowered to learn and grow.

  • We value the rich cultural diversity of our school whānau and the wider community. Through strong partnerships with parents, iwi, and local organisations, we create learning experiences that are authentic, relevant, and grounded in place-based knowledge and values.
